PIACENZA
A SMART CITY INITIATIVE

Here we will investigate how to make Piacenza a smarter city and discuss the possible steps to achive our goal.

WHY A SMARTER PIACENZA?

By 2050 75% of the world’s population will live in cities. Piacenza is a medium-sized city that faces several problems. Not only on the territorial level, like the increase of the urban drift, but also on the social
level, like the lack of community engagement; cultural activities; safe streets
and lack of sustainable solutions.

However, the challenges also offer many opportunities at the same time. Using technologies like iot and other smart systems can help to conquer the challenges Piacenza is facing and help the city adapt to the future changes.

Cities are ‘systems of systems’: planning and manage-ment services;infrastructure services and human services, each divided into three sub-systems with instrumented, interconnected and intelligent components.

Instrumented refers to the capability of capturing and integrating live real-world data through the use of sensors, meters, appliances, personal devices, and other similar sensors.

Interconnected refers to the integration of these data into a computing platform that allows the communication of such information among the various city services.

Intelligent refers to the inclusion of complex analytics, modeling, optimization, visualization services and artificial intelligence to make better operational decisions.

STAKEHOLDERS

In order to solve smart city challenges, the best first step is to bring together city stakeholders (government, business, universities, community organisations, public services and citizens) to explore the complexity of the issues they face, and involve them in collaborative decision making and future planning of their city.

STRATEGY

To ensure a correct implementation of the “smart city” concept in Piacenza, the proposed strategy is initiated and implemented on the following three key areas.

  1. Smart Government: The actions are set to improve public services, enhancing the collaboration between different parties such as the citizens and the industries, while providing public access to required information. The overall goal is to provide a more effective government on several layers.

  2. Smart Businesses: The implemented actions aim to connect the smart city innovations with business  opportunities and initiatives for sustainable development, for example: smart mobility, waste management and innovative industries.

  3. Smart Citizens: The main key to ensure the spread of this concept in an effective way is to engage the citizens of Piacenza. Hence, the actions are set to increase the citizen’s participation in the various strategies implemented during the proposed time frame of the smart city concept.

2040

By the end of 2040, the aim of this concept is increase the economic benefits of Piacenza. Therefore, companies should be incentivized to fund the smart city projects through green stimulus packages and strategies that help reduce their financial risk whilst also providing potential for ancillary income. It is important to underline that prioritizing the changes to urban infrastructure is a central element to accelerate the implementation of this concept.
